What are Teammate Skills?

A Skill is a packaged piece of expertise that you give to an AI Teammate. It bundles the instructions, workflow, and know-how for doing a specific job well — along with any reference files the AI Teammate needs to do that job your way.

On their own, AI Teammates are capable generalists. Skills turn that general capability into dependable, repeatable performance at a defined task. A single AI Teammate can have many Skills and will draw on the right one based on the work at hand. When you add an AI Teammate from the Asana Teammates Gallery, it arrives already equipped with the Skills for its role.

How AI Teammate Skills work

Every Skill is made up of a few parts that work together:

  • Guidance — the instructions and workflow that tell the AI Teammate how to approach the job.
  • Trigger conditions — the signals that tell the AI Teammate when to reach for this Skill instead of another.
  • Attachments (optional) — reference files you upload so the AI Teammate works from your team’s actual materials.

Skills are loaded selectively. A Skill’s guidance and attachments only enter the AI Teammate’s working context when that Skill is actually activated. So unrelated Skills never add noise, and an AI Teammate can hold a deep set of Skills without becoming unfocused.

Skills also sit on a granularity spectrum. Some are broad and apply across many situations; others are narrow and tuned to one specific task. The out-of-the-box AI Teammates combine a thoughtful mix to cover the full range of work their roles involve.

The Asana Skills library

The Asana Skills Library is a catalog of Skills that Asana has authored and tested as a starting point for common AI Teammate actions.

When you apply a Library Skill to an AI Teammate, that Skill is copied onto the AI Teammate — the same way applying a project template gives you your own copy to work with. From there, you and your team are free to edit the skill and add attachments that are specific to that AI Teammate. Because each Skill is applied as an independent copy, changes you make to one AI Teammate’s Skill don’t affect other AI Teammates.

Adding a Skill to an AI Teammate

  1. Open the AI Teammate you want to configure and go to its Skills tab.
  2. Select + Add skills to browse the Asana Skills Library.
  3. Find the Skill you want, then choose + Add skill from template to add it to the AI Teammate.
  4. Review the Skill’s details and adjust it for your team if needed.

Customizing and editing Skills

Users with edit or admin permissions can edit the instructions of any Skill applied to a Teammate.

  1. Open the AI Teammate and go to its Skills tab.
  2. Select the Skill you want to change.
  3. Edit the Skill’s instructions.
  4. Save your changes.

Creating your own Skills

Beyond the curated Library, Editors and Admins can create new Skills directly on an AI Teammate in one of two ways:

  • Start from a blank Skill — create an empty Skill and author the guidance yourself.
  • Upload a Markdown file — import existing instructions from a .md file as the Skill’s content.

Skill attachments: adding your context

Many of the most valuable Skills require your organization’s own reference material to perform at an expert level.

Attachments let you upload files directly to a Skill so the AI Teammate has those materials on hand whenever the Skill runs. Attachments are used only when that skill is used.

Adding an attachment

  1. Open the AI Teammate and go to its Skills tab.
  2. Select the Skill you want to add context to.
  3. In the Attachments area, choose Upload and select your file.
  4. The file is now available to the AI Teammate whenever that Skill is used.
